The Maldives has won the election to the post of the President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, at the elections held today at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Maldives candidate, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid won the election with 143 votes, out of a total of 191 votes cast.

Minister Shahid was nominated as the Maldives candidate for the election, by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for the Asia-Pacific Group’s turn, for the session that would commence on 14 September 2021.

This is the first time the Maldives has presented a candidate for the Presidency of the General Assembly. The victory meant that the Maldives will be only the sixth President from a Small Island Developing State, presiding over the UN General Assembly in the history of the United Nations.

The United Nations General Assembly is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, serving as the main deliberative, policy-making, and representative organ of the UN. The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA) is responsible for chairing the United Nations General Assembly session for the elected term and is also the presiding officer for this duration. Furthermore, the PGA represents the whole membership at conferences, other international and regional meetings, and can co-host events with Member States and other partners.

The Maldives joined the United Nations on 21 September 1965, soon after gaining independence and has since been an active member.

The Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of Japan, with a view to further developing friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries, signed an exchange of notes today at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Her Excellency Keiko Yanai signed the Exchange of Notes on the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship.

Under the terms of the Exchange of Notes, the Government of Japan shall provide scholarships for six Maldivian students per year for a period of four years.
Minister Shahid expressed sincere appreciation to the Government and the people of Japan and noted that the scholarships will provide immense contribution towards the human resource development of Maldives.

The government of Japan has always been a consistent partner of the Maldives and has contributed to the social, environmental and education sector of Maldives.

The Government of Japan has also provided a grant of USD 356,400 for UNICEF Maldives and USD 185,000 for Maldives Red Crescent to assist the Government in its efforts to respond to COVID-19. The Government of Japan has also committed a grant of USD 1.4 million to the UNDP Maldives in support of small and medium enterprises in agri-businesses affected by COVID-19.

The Government of Japan provides a grant aid of 600,000,000 Japanese yen (worth USD 5.6 million)  to the Maldives for further promoting the economic and social development in the country. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Keiko Yanai signed the Exchange of Notes relating to the grant aid, at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this afternoon.

This grant aid will be utilized to procure medical equipment required to strengthen the capacities of health facilities in atolls/islands. Under this grant aid, equipment including, 10 bedside X-ray machines, 65 bedside monitors, 19 portable ultrasound image diag systems, 200 automated external defibrillators and 160 syringe pumps will be provided.

Minister Shahid expressed sincere appreciation to the Government and the people of Japan, for the timely and important grant aid as Maldives continues to fight back the community outbreak of COVID-19.

The Japanese Ambassador, in her remarks noted the importance of solidarity among international community to fight against the pandemic and further highlighted on Japan’s commitment to actively collaborate in this regard.

The Government of Japan provides a grant aid of 500,000,000 Japanese yen (MVR 68,750,000*) to the Maldives for further promoting the economic and social development in the country. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Yanai Keiko signed the Exchange of Notes relating to the grant aid, at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this afternoon.


This grant aid will be utilized to further strengthen the capacities of the Maldives Immigration and the Maldives Customs Services towards strengthening border control and countering terrorism. Under the grant aid, equipment, including facial recognition system, mobile x-rays, counterfeit bill detectors, special luminescent microscope, speedboats, and vehicles will be provided to the two agencies.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Shahid thanked the Government of Japan for the grant aid, characterizing it as yet another important gesture of Japan’s goodwill and extraordinary generosity to the Maldives. Minister Shahid recalled that expanding of bilateral cooperation into areas, such as counterterrorism and border security were among the key issues discussed during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s Official Visit to Japan in October 2019, and therefore, the conclusion of the Exchange of Notes today marks an important outcome following the President’s Visit.
The Japanese Ambassador, in her remarks, noted that this grant assistance aims to strengthen the capacity and capability of the Maldives Immigration and Maldives Customs Service for border control and operational readiness. The Maldives, especially given the remoteness and vulnerabilities of islands, maintaining secure maritime, land and air borders is a key to the national security and public safety, and coordination among the relevant agencies is extremely important.
Japan is an important bilateral partner of the Maldives for several decades. Discussions are currently going on between the two Governments for a project to assist the Maldives to increase the capacities of the health service providers in the country during the spread of COVID-19.
Earlier this month, the Government of Japan provided a grant of USD 356,400 for UNICEF Maldives and USD 185,000 for Maldives Red Crescent to assist the Government in its efforts to respond to COVID-19. The Government of Japan has also committed a grant of USD 1.4 million to the UNDP Maldives that will support small and medium enterprises (SME’s) affected by COVID-19.
